Tara is often referred to as the mother of the Buddhas of the three times. She represents virtuous and enlightened activity. It is said that when Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of compassion, looked upon the misery of the world he shed tears of compassion and from the pool of these tears Tara was born to help him. There are many aspects of Tara, White Tara in particular symbolises long life. The lineage of the Uncommon White Tara with Six Rays of Light was passed from lord Atisha to the Kadampa masters, who then passed it on to the Sakya school which maintained an unbroken lineage of this practice to the present day.
